FORT SMITH, ARKANSAS (December 1998) - Rheem Manufacturing Company Air
Conditioning Division has installed its three millionth Copeland®
Compliant Scroll® Compressor. Rheem Manufacturing Company is the
only air conditioning equipment manufacturer that offers the Copeland
Compliant Scroll Compressor as standard equipment in every residential
condensing unit it builds under its Rheem®, Ruud®, and WeatherKing®
brand labels, regardless of S.E.E.R. level.
Scroll compressors are the quietest, most durable compressors ever developed.
The Rheem Manufacturing Company commitment to Compliant Scroll technology
has provided cooling products with higher efficiencies, quieter operation,
lower energy costs, greater reliability, and enhanced home comfort for
millions of Rheem, Ruud, and WeatherKing customers throughout the world.
"Compliant Scroll Compressors use an advanced orbiting technology that
eliminates the need for pistons and valves found in old-fashioned reciprocating
compressors," says William Lux, Rheem Vice President Marketing. "These
quiet, highly efficient compressors use two scroll-shaped elements to
compress refrigerant gas in a smooth, continuous fashion. It's the smoothest,
quietest, most efficient compressor technology ever invented." The Rheem
commitment to the superior value and efficiency of scroll compressors
was further demonstrated recently by Rheem when the company began installing
Copeland Compliant Scroll Compressors in its expanding line of commercial
package unit products.
Copeland introduced its first line of Compliant Scroll Compressors in
1987. Rheem Manufacturing Company began installing the advanced compressors
into its high efficiency air conditioners in 1988. The Rheem tradition
of quality prompted the company to adopt an "all-scroll" initiative in
1994. Today, every residential Rheem, Ruud, and WeatherKing air conditioner
and most commercial air conditioners carries the distinctive "Scroll Inside"
label on the outside. "Scroll Inside" is a registered trademark of Rheem
Manufacturing Company.
Simple operation is the heart of the scroll's success. "As the orbiting
element contacts the stationary scroll, gas entering from the outside
of the scroll is sealed by crescent-shaped pockets that are formed. These
pockets get smaller as they get closer to the center, compressing the
gas continuously until it is discharged through the center of the scroll,"
explained Brandy Powell, Director of Air Conditioning Marketing for Copeland.
"Copeland's Compliant Scroll technology is based on the concept of compliance,"
Powell continued. "Compliance refers to the method in which the two scroll
members interact to simultaneously achieve high efficiency and durability.
Copeland's unique and patented approach - achieving both radial and axial
compliance - provides important advantages." Among these are:
- Continuous flank contact, maintained by centrifugal force, minimizes
gas leakage and maximizes efficiency
- Radial compliance allows the scroll members to separate the presence
of liquid refrigerant or debris, thereby substantially improving durability
and reliability
- Axial compliance allows the scroll to remain in continuous contact
in all normal operating conditions, ensuring minimal leakage without
the use of tip seals
- Both radial and axial compliance allow the scroll members to actually
"wear in" rather than out.
"By developing strategic partnerships with suppliers like Copeland Corporation,
Rheem Manufacturing Company Air Conditioning Division continues to do
the things necessary to ensure customer satisfaction leadership into the
next century," noted Ross Willis, President of the Air Conditioning Division.
