Heat stress is a danger at this time of year, especially for older adults, young children and persons with chronic medical conditions or who are on certain medications.
But anyone can suffer from heat stress. You should know the symptoms. They include dizziness, nausea or vomiting, rapid pulse, muscle cramps and weakness. Serious injury, even death, can result from heat stress.
If you see someone suffering from these symptoms, you can:
Have the person lie down in a shaded area.
Give plenty of fluids.
Have the person take a shower or bath.
Spray cool water on the person.
Seek medical help.
You can avoid heat stress by drinking plenty of fluids, even before you feel thirsty. Don't drink alcoholic beverages. Wear loose, light-colored clothing and wear a hat or cap. Confine any strenuous activities to early morning or early evening hours, when temperatures are usually lower.
